Cupro Fabrics: Sewing Tips and Care Instructions

Cupro, which is short for ‘Cuprammonium Rayon’, is a regenerated cellulose fabric that is made from recycled cotton linter. Cotton linter is dissolved into a cuprammonium solution and spun into fiber and then the fiber is spun into yarn.  One set of the yarns is passed across lengthwise (warp) while the other set is passed across the width (weft). These two sets of yarns are interlocked together to form the woven fabric, Cupro. The way the fabric looks, feels and reacts when it is worn and washed depends on how it is woven. There are different types of Cupro fabrics based on their weaving methods. They include Cupro Satin, Plain Cupro and Cupro Twill.

LIGHT CUPRO SATIN

It has four or more weft yarns floating over a warp yarn and four warp yarns over a single weft yarn. This gives it the sheen finish. It is smooth and glossy on one side of the fabric, while it is matte on the other side of the fabric. It can be used to make clothing items such as lingerie, evening gowns, tops, blouses and sometimes shorts.

Sewing tips

  • Place pattern weights on fabric to hold it down and not slip while cutting.
  • Make chalk markings on the dull side of the fabric only with an air soluble pen or tailor’s chalk.
  • Pin only on seam allowances to prevent leaving permanent holes on the fabric.
  • Use very sharp scissors to cut fabric.
  • Use a universal needle, size 10/70 when sewing.
  • Use a cotton-wrapped polyester thread or 100% polyester thread.
  • You will need to use a ‘stay tape’ on some areas of your garment like the neckline, to avoid stretching.

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash or delicate machine wash.
  • Warm wash 30 degrees.
  • Dry flat.
  • Always iron on the wrong side of fabric.
  • Do not steam iron to avoid water spotting, rather, dry iron your garment.
  • Iron on low heat.

LIGHT PLAIN CUPRO

The warp thread of the Light Cupro Fabric goes over the weft thread and then under the next weft thread and so on. The threads cross each other at right angles. The fabric is soft, breathable and drapes elegantly. It is used to make flowy garments like shirts, skirts, dresses, tops and trousers.

  • It is made from cotton waste known as linter.
  • It is made from 100% plant-based materials which makes it biodegradable.
  • It is produced in closed loop. The chemicals used to produce the fabric can be extracted and reused. The water also can be reused.
  • Less quantity of dye is needed to obtain a color for the fabric because it absorbs dye easily compared to other fabrics.
  • It is cruelty free because no animals were hurt in the making.

We offer a wide range of Cupro fabrics in different colors, which you can see here. All our fabrics are made in Europe.
